When should I feed my sundew plant?
While there is not a requirement for a regular feeding regimen, I would encourage you to try feeding your sundews once every 1-2 months or sooner for optimal growth and health.
Does Drosera go dormant?
Dormancy: Temperate sundews will go dormant in winter. This is triggered by exposure to a combination of shorter photo periods and colder temperatures from October to February. Many of their leaves will die back and growth will slow during this time.
Where does Drosera grow?
Sundews generally grow in seasonally moist or more rarely constantly wet habitats with acidic soils and high levels of sunlight. Common habitats include bogs, fens, swamps, marshes, the tepuis of Venezuela, the wallums of coastal Australia, the fynbos of South Africa, and moist streambanks.
Does Drosera capillaris need dormancy?
The ones I grow outdoors grow all year long. Of course as stated above, different location plants grow differently. So the answer to your question regarding dormancy is that the plants native to my location do not require a dormancy.
Can you overfeed Drosera?
You absolutely can overfeed a sundew. Sundew plants only need a couple of small bugs a month to survive. If you feed a sundew too much, it is possible to drain what little energy it has, especially if it is sick.
Do sundews eat ants?
You can also feed ants or other small, live insects to your plant. Your sundew will do best if you only feed it a single bug about once a week. If you want to let it catch its own food, you can place it in an open area where bugs will be likely to land on it.
Do sundews need to go dormant?
Most sundews (apart from the hardy ones) do not require a dormant period, and if kept warm enough, will keep growing all winter. However some such as the fork-leaved, and Cape sundews (D. capensis, D. aliciae) will die back if kept in a cold greenhouse.
How do you take care of Drosera rotundifolia?
Drosera Rotundifolia prefers bright, indirect lighting indoors and partial to full shade if kept outside. Drosera Rotundifolia flowers from June to September and offers an abundance of seeds. Drosera Rotundifolia requires 6 months of dormancy, annually and may appear dead or wilted to an untrained eye.
How do you treat Drosera capensis?
Provide partial sunlight (several hours of direct sunlight with bright filtered light during the day). Avoid full shade. Direct sun can burn them, though with determination, the tougher species such as Drosera capensis can be acclimated to more extreme heat and direct sun over the length of a few seasons.
How are the flowers of a Drosera plant complete?
Flowers The flowers of Drosera species are classified as “perfect” and “complete” in plant biology because they contain both male and female reproductive organs in the same flower and can produce viable seeds by self-pollination (unlike Nepenthes). Sundew flowers are “complete” because they have all four types of flower structures, or “whorls”:
Can a Drosera capensis be grown year round?
Drosera capensis ‘Albino’ form will develop light pink tentacles under strong lighting. Dormancy requirements: None required. Can be grown year-round if given subtropical conditions year-round (ie. grown indoors during the cold months).
When do temperate Drosera need a rest period?
Temperate Drosera must have a rest period of a few months every year. When the days become shorter and cooler in the fall, the plants begin to slow down and not grow as much. Some species of Drosera, such as the intermedia, will die back almost completely during the winter. During dormancy temperate Drosera should be kept cool.
How often should I water my Drosera sundew?
Drosera should not be watered nearly as often because they don’t need nor use as much water during their dormancy. When spring arrives, your sundew will appreciate being placed in warmer conditions and watered more frequently again through the growing season. Tropical Drosera can be given the same basic care year round.
