Where does the FBI hold prisoners?
Defendants charged with a federal crime, who are detained, are generally housed in a Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) detention facility pending the outcome of the criminal case. In some, but rare instances, federal detainees can be held at local county jails pending trial and sentencing.
How are federal prisons funded?
Public prisons, or state-operated institutions, are entirely owned and run by the government and are mainly funded through tax dollars. Federal prisons outsource a lot of their spending to other companies. For example, private companies are often hired to run food services and maintenance.
