There is a receipt that is generated when the payments are made by an employee. It is important to know about the different aspects of the challan as this helps give clarity to you about your payments.
What is ECR filing?
ECR stands for Electronic Challan cum Return. This is an electronic monthly return to be uploaded by the employers through the Unified Portal. The approval of uploaded ECR will result in the generation of a Challan using which the employer has to remit the dues in the designated branches of SBI.
How can I deposit my EPF Challan online?

- Login to the Unified web portal of EPFO using your ECR portal credentials.
- Complete the details as required in the portal for generation of TRRN and generation of challan.
- After finalizing the challan, select “Pay” option and then the “online” option.
What is EPF 7Q and 14B Challan?
If an employer makes payment of dues after the due date, he/she is liable to pay damages under Section 14B and interest under section 7Q. When a remittance is deposited on the unified portal after due date, the system will automatically calculate 14B/7Q, and generate challan for online payment of the same.

Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) is an electronic return in plain text format. All employers of covered establishments under EPF can now file Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) from April 2012 and can dispense with filing physical returns in Form 5, 10, 12A, 3A, and 6A.

Steps for PF Payment Online
- Ensure PF details of establishment such as establishment ID, Name, address, exemption status, etc.
- From ‘Payment’ option drop down select ‘ECR upload’
- Select ‘Wage Month’, ‘Salary Disbursal Date’, Rate of contribution and upload ECR text file.
What is 7Q under EPF Act?
1[7Q. Interest payable by the employer. —The employer shall be liable to pay simple interest at the rate of twelve per cent.
Where can I pay Challan in EPFO form?
The employer may choose to make the payment through internet banking of SBI or take a print out of the Challan and pay at any designated branch of State Bank of India (SBI). No paper return to be prepared and submitted to EPFO. No need to submit other returns viz Form 5/10/12A,3A and 6A.
What are the penalties for late payment of EPF Challan?
Upon the late payment of EPF Challan, the following two penalties are applied- Interest for late payment under Section 7Q- An interest of 12% per annum, for every single day is levied on the employer if he/she fails to deposit the EPF contribution before the deadline
How can I upload my ECR / Challan online?
Employers are requested to Register their establishments and create their user id and password through this portal.The registered employers can upload the Electronic Return and the uploaded return data will be displayed through a digitally signed copy in PDF format. It will be available for printing also.
How does upload of ECR in EPFO work?
The approval of uploaded ECR will result in the generation of a Challan using which the employer has to remit the dues through online payment. Thus, each ECR will be linked with a remitted Challan and the ECRs uploaded but not remitted will lapse after 12 days of the generation of the Challan.
