What is Custodiol?
Custodiol is an intracellular crystalloid cardioplegic solution used by some centres for myocardial protection in complex cardiac surgery and for organ preservation in transplant surgery.
How does Custodiol cardioplegia work?
Custodiol® solution, also called histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) or Bretschneider’s solution, is a particular kind of long-acting intracellular crystalloid cardioplegia (CCP) that differs from other extracellular cardioplegic solutions because of its low sodium and potassium content that induce the diastolic …
What is in UW solution?
Reimagine the Future of Organ Transport and Preservation Belzer UW® Cold Storage Solution is a sterile non-pyrogenic solution with approximate calculations as follows: Osmolarity of 320mOsm. Sodium concentration of 29 mEq/L. Potassium concentration of 125 mEq/L.
What is blood cardioplegia?
The goal of cardioplegia is to provide a motionless (non-beating) operative field along with the protection of myocardial function. Early cardioplegic methods used cold crystalloid solutions to induce and maintain cardiac arrest during heart surgery.
What are types of cardioplegia?
One of the most important myocardial protection techniques is cardioplegia – indirect or direct administration of cardioplegic solution to the coronary arteries. Both crystalloid cardioplegia and blood cardioplegia are widely used in pediatric cardiac surgery [1–3].
What is a cardioplegic solution?
Solution. Cardioplegia Solution A is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution for cardiac perfusion in a Viaflex bag. It is used to induce cardiac stasis and to protect the myocardium during open-heart surgery.
Who invented cardioplegia?
The term cardioplegia (cardio, heart and plegia, paralysis) was first introduced by Lam in 1957 (Lam et al., 1957), yet the method of arrest has its roots in the early experiments of British physiologist Sidney Ringer using the frog heart (Figure 2).
What is Viaspan used for?
Developed in the late 1980s by Folkert Belzer and James Southard for pancreas preservation, the solution soon displaced EuroCollins solution as the preferred medium for cold storage of livers and kidneys, as well as pancreas. The solution has also been used for hearts and other organs.
What is the purpose of Custodiol HTK perfusion?
Custodiol® HTK Solution is intended for perfusion and flushing donor kidney, liver, heart, and pancreas prior to removal from the donor and for preserving these organs during hypothermic storage and transport to the recipient. It is based on the principle of inactivating organ function by withdrawal of extracellular sodium and calcium,…
When to use Custodiol for selective perfusion?
It is indicated only for selective perfusion of the kidney, liver, pancreas and heart and for cooling of the surface areas, i.e., for the preservation of the donor organ during the transport from donor to recipient. Custodiol® may not be used for systemic infusion. Warning: Custodiol® is not indicated for continuous perfusion.
Can a Custodiol be used for the heart?
Custodiol® can be considered for the heart and abdominal organs as a “universal” preservation solution.
Which is better Custodiol HTK or UW solution?
This study compared the experimental outcomes of donor heart preservation in rats between Custodiol HTK and UW solutions. It concluded that HTK is much more effective than UW solution for heart preservation, and that HTK may lead to better techniques in heart preservation for transplantation.
