Does it hurt to get packing removed from ear?
There is typically no pain during the packing removal, just a tugging sensation. Your ear is still packed with dissolvable packing. Much of this packing will d disappear as you use the eardrops.
How long does it take for packing to dissolve in ear after surgery?
After hydration, MeroGel ear packing typically dissolves in about six weeks. In the external ear canal, MeroGel ear packing will dissolve in approximately two weeks, if kept hydrated (Fig. 2).
When do you remove ear packing?
Your ear will probably feel blocked or stuffy. You may not be able to hear as well as before. This usually gets better as the eardrum heals and after the doctor takes the cotton or gauze packing out of the ear canal. The doctor will take out the packing 1 to 2 weeks after surgery.

The patient goes home the day of surgery and may return to work in 3-7 days. The ear is packed and the patient places ear drops on the packing starting 3 weeks after surgery. Healing is usually complete in 6 weeks, and the hearing may continue to improve for 2-3 months.
