How many supports do you need for a 12×12 deck?
For an attached 12 x 12′ deck, you’ll need at least 3 footings, plus at least 2 more if you’re planning on building stairs with it.
How do you support a deck without posts?
Instead of using footings, adding a level of gravel will give you the drainage aspect you are looking for. You can then add a frame of wood that anchors in concrete blocks that sit in the gravel, creating your new deck. Concrete blocks won’t rot, making them an ideal option for those who don’t want to use wood.
How do you support a high deck?
Another option for supporting upper decks is to use independent 6×6 columns (they can be up to 20 feet in height) that go through the lower deck’s framing adjacent to the lower deck columns, distributing the upper-deck loads directly to the footings.
What do you put under ground level deck?
If the bottom of your deck frame is less than 6″ above the ground or partially buried, you should use pressure-treated wood that is rated for ground contact. This type of wood has a higher level of preservative that guards the wood against rot and decay.
How do you support a deck on the ground?
You just screw the auger portion into the ground using a lightweight hand-held impact wrench and never experience any kick back. If you hit an obstacle like a rock, you can easily reverse the deck foot anchor out and move over a bit. You can then screw on any post bracket you need.
How tall does a deck need to be to support a four by four?
Deck blocks are at most about seven inches in height, meaning that they’re really meant for decks that are low to the ground. The variant that’s designed to support a four-by-four allows you to build higher, but I would recommend keeping a deck built with deck blocks lower than six feet from the ground to the surface of the deck.
Can a concrete deck support a 6×6 post?
However, most concrete deck blocks can only hold 4×4 posts, not 6x6s and they have no lateral strength at the base of the post. Also, if you drop set the framing into the groove, the underside of the joist is still 5-6″ above grade.
Do you need above ground or below ground deck piers?
If the weight of your deck along with the local climate, type of soil and local building codes allow for above-ground deck piers, installation can save a lot of hard work over below-ground options. If your soil is firm and the climate is suitable, you can place the piers directly on level ground to support your deck.
