How is cladribine chemotherapy administered?

Cladribine is administered by infusion through a vein. The infusion may be over 1-2 hours on consecutive days, or may be a continuous infusion over several days. The way it is given depends on the protocol chosen by your physician. There is no pill form of cladribine.

How is cladribine given?

Cladribine injection comes as a solution (liquid) to be injected intravenously (into a vein) by a doctor or nurse in a medical facility. It is usually given slowly over 7 days as a continuous intravenous injection.

What is cladribine intravenous?

Cladribine belongs to the group of medicines called antimetabolites. It is used to treat hairy cell leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It is also sometimes used to treat other kinds of cancer, as determined by your doctor.

How long do the side effects of cladribine last?

About half of all patients treated with the chemotherapy drug cladribine (Leustatin®) get fevers of about 100° F during or immediately after treatment. The fevers aren’t associated with infection; they’re caused by a drop in hairy cells in the body. The fevers usually go away in three to 10 days.

How often is cladribine given?

Subsequently cladribine has been administered intravenously, as a 2 h infusion for 5 consecutive days or weekly for 7 weeks, or subcutaneously. These regimens are all very effective but often show relevant toxicity. The subcutaneous route is easier to administer and may increase compliance of the patient.

Mavenclad is a disease modifying drug (DMD) for very active relapsing remitting MS. You have fewer relapses than you might have had with no treatment.
