What is xming server used for?
XMing is a free X window server for Microsoft Windows. It allows one to use Linux graphical applications remotely. A detailed description may be found at the software’s home page.

Do I need xming?
Xming is the recommended application for X11 forwarding on Windows systems. You may also need to install Xming-fonts in some application like Cadence.
How do I start Xming?
Double-click the Xming desktop icon to start the X-windows server. The Xming server is running if you see the Xming icon in the taskbar. Double-click the public/private key desktop icon to start Pageant.
How do I run xming?
Running Xming:
- To run Xming, select XLaunch from the Start Menu.
- Select ‘Multiple Windows’.
- Select ‘Start no client’ to make XLaunch wait for other programs (such as PuTTY).
- Select ‘Clipboard’ to share the clipboard.
- Finally save the configuration.
How do I get Xming to work?
Start Xming by double-clicking on the Xming icon. Open the PuTTY session configuration window (start Putty) In the PuTTY configuration window, select “Connection –> SSH –> X11” Make sure that the “Enable X11 forwarding” box is checked.
Is Xming free?
Xming X Server for Windows was a free download product with the latest public domain release in 2016. The 2019 versions now require payment. Cygwin is a large collection of GNU and Open Source tools which provide functionality similar to a Linux distribution on Windows.

What kind of renderer does Xming use?
Xming uses Microsoft’s OpenGL renderer interface as standard (i.e. unless a Mesa version). You need the Mesa libraries or a Mesa version when you have an awkward X client that’s failing to display. Xming Mesa versions usually render most clients that use OpenGL.
Are there any adverts in The Xming installer?
Xming installers include executable code, and libraries, only built by me, Colin Harrison (Project Xming’s chief developer) + this website is free of adverts, pop-ups and usage tracking of any kind, including cookies, and is hosted on machines only administered by me.
Do you need Xming server for Windows-fonts?
Xming-fonts are however needed by traditional X applications e.g. emacs . Since these standard X Window fonts tend to be ugly, you could use better TrueType fonts from your Microsoft system like this. Instead of installing Xming-fonts, to provide core X fonts, you could use an X font server on your network.
